Tom Patti is a widely respected artist who has devoted much of his career to researching different formulations of glasses and hot-forming techniques and to exploring industrial and architectural glass as a sculptural medium. Over the last 35 years, he has used glass to build and define spaces that transform surface, light, and color. A multi-media installation by Jennilie Brewster of Brooklyn, New York and Daniele Genadry, formerly of Hanover, New Hampshire will be on display in AVA Gallery and Art Centers EN Wennberg Gallery from September 5 through October 4, 2008. A reception, free and open to the public, will take place Friday, September 5, from 5 to 7pm. Brewster and Genadrys multi-media installation explores the perceptual, material, architectural, and metaphorical possibilities of the optical phenomenon Fata Morgana a form of mirage that occurs mostly in polar regions and in high mountain valleys, where images may seem to vibrate, stretch, flip, and multiply, blurring the line between the real and the imagined. Brewster is a large-scale painter who recently worked on site-specific installations that explore issues of land use. She holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and an MFA from Bard College. Genadrys work finds expression in paintings, wall installations, woodcuts, and multiple-screen prints. The experience of living in multiple places recent years have brought her to Beirut, Como, Hanover, London, and Rome is reflected in her landscapes, which address the temporal and physical shifts of such experiences. After receiving a BA from Dartmouth College in 2002, Genadry worked as an intern at AVA, prior to her move to London, where she recently received an MFA from the Slade School of Art.

A Hang is a harmonically tuned steel idiophone created by PANArt in Switzerland. It uses some of the same physical principles as a steelpan but with a nitrided surface and structural change of having two clamped shells with a small opening so that the instrument is a Helmholtz Resonator. The creation of the Hang was the result of many years of research on the steelpan as well as the study of a diverse collection of instruments from around the world such as gongs, gamelan, ghatam/udu, drums, and bells. Metallurgical and acoustic research by the makers has led to significant changes and refinement in structure, design, and process over the years since the first Hang was offered. The instrument is often referred to as a Hang drum, because it is often played like a drum due to its popularity with hand drummers. There are many ways to coax sound out of a Hang that do not involve 'drumming'. The work was installed for a one-off evening event entitled, 'The Fractured Body: The House as Body' curated by Mobile Studio as part of The Surreal House exhibition at Barbican Art Gallery. DESCRIPTION 'The Family' is a sound installation that takes the form of a staircase. The work acts to isolate the mundane and evoke a reaction from the banality of normal objects and their modified sounds. The staircase piece plays a series of collected sounds based around the daily entrance and exit of a family from their home. Each step has a sound of its own, relating to a specific family member. Adjacent to the installation is a film made from the actions and sounds of the family members which becomes choreographed where the actors play the roles of the family and each 'play' their own set sequences and in turn question the overlap and role of the family in relationships to the house. PROFILE Pearson is a young London based sound artist and musician interested in the relationship between the perception of sound and space. Josef Svoboda (May 10, 1920 in Čáslav - April 8, 2002 in Prague) was a Czech artist and scenic designer. Svoboda was born in Čáslav, Czechoslovakia (today the Czech Republic). He began his training as an architect at the Central School of Housing in Prague. At the end of World War II he became interested in theatre and design. He began to study scenography at the Prague Conservatory and architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts. Svoboda became the principal designer at the Czech National Theatre in 1948 and held that position for more than 30 years. His multimedia installations Laterna Magika and Polyekran with director Alfréd Radok allowed him to be internationally known in 1958. These productions introduced the combination of live actors and filmed projections. Svoboda is also responsible for introducing modern technologies and materials such as plastics, hydraulics and lasers into his designs. In 1967 Svoboda created one of is best known special effects, a three-dimensional pillar of light. This was created by the use of an aerosol mixture which revealed low-voltage luminaries.
