Chinese traditional architectural craftsmanship for timber-framed structures Tube. Duration : 9.45 Mins.
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Standing as distinctive symbols of Chinese architectural culture, timber-framed structures are found throughout the country. The wooden components such as the columns, beams, purlins, lintel and bracket sets are connected by tenon joints in a flexible, earthquake-resistant way. The surprisingly strong frames can be installed quickly at the building site by assembling components manufactured in advanced. In addition to this structural carpentry, the architectural craft also encompasses decorative woodworking, tile roofing, stonework, decorative painting and other arts passed down from masters to apprentices through verbal and practical instruction. Each phase of the construction procedure demonstrates its unique and systematic methods and skills. Employed today mainly in the construction of structures in the traditional style and in restoring ancient timber-framed buildings, Chinese traditional architectural craftsmanship for timber-framed structures embodies a heritage of wisdom and craftsmanship and reflects an inherited understanding of nature and interpersonal relationships in traditional Chinese society. For the carpenters and artisans who preserve this architectural style, and for the people who have lived in and among the spaces defined by it for generations, it has become a central visual component of Chinese identity and an important representative ...

The Family, 2010 (by sound artist Ed Pearson) Tube. Duration : 2.28 Mins.
The work was installed for a one-off evening event entitled, 'The Fractured Body: The House as Body' curated by Mobile Studio as part of The Surreal House exhibition at Barbican Art Gallery. DESCRIPTION 'The Family' is a sound installation that takes the form of a staircase. The work acts to isolate the mundane and evoke a reaction from the banality of normal objects and their modified sounds. The staircase piece plays a series of collected sounds based around the daily entrance and exit of a family from their home. Each step has a sound of its own, relating to a specific family member. Adjacent to the installation is a film made from the actions and sounds of the family members which becomes choreographed where the actors play the roles of the family and each 'play' their own set sequences and in turn question the overlap and role of the family in relationships to the house. PROFILE Pearson is a young London based sound artist and musician interested in the relationship between the perception of sound and space. He recently graduated from the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, where he studied Architectural Studies and Design. He is also a musician in alternative rock band; Islington Boys' Club and co-runs Club.The.Mammoth For more info, please visit:- www.barbican.org.uk www.barbican.org.uk www.theMobileStudio.co.uk http

Dr Theodore Carney Family Home Ilion NY Video Clips. Duration : 3.05 Mins.
In 1959, Dr. Theodore and Margaret Carney began plans to build a 3600 square foot house; one that could accommodate their growing family. The architect of their new home was Egils P. Hermanovski of Great Neck, NY. The architectural style was Mid-Century modern. The style (also referred to as Post-War Modern) arose from the post WWII suburban housing boom. Characteristics of MCM architecture include: clean, simple lines; walls of glass, open floor plans that incorporate outdoor space; open, beamed ceilings; emphasis on the horizontal plane, and flat, or wide-angled roofs. The architect's title for the Carney house plan was The "Triangle". The land was cleared by general contractor, John LaFlair, on Wednesday, May 20, 1959. The foundation was dug May 22, 1959. Building of the concrete block foundation was started on May 26, 1959 by the Netti brothers. Ray Johnson was the plumbing contractor. On January 1, 1960, Ted and Margaret Carney moved, with their eight children, from their 3 bedroom home on High St., into the new home at 12 Crescent Street, Ilion NY. By 1963, nine Carney children were living in the home with their parents. After Dr. Carney's death in 1967, Margaret continued to raise her family, in the 'big' house, for a total or 34 years. Who says you can't go home again? Take a peek inside the Carney home, as it was back in 1994, just prior to being sold. Watercolor painting by Guy Corriero www.guycorriero.com Music Parting by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com ...
