The Italian-born, British architect Richard Rogers has been awarded this year's Pritzker Prize, the world's most prestigious prize in architecture. The jury cited the 73-year-old Rogers as "a champion of urban life who believes in the city as a catalyst for social change." Richard Rogers's work is immediately recognizable. Most famous perhaps is his first major work -- the Centre Pompidou in Paris -- that he designed with the Italian architect Renzo Piano. Its radical design with many of the building's functions set on the outside was extremely controversial in the early 1970s. Now it is seen as a landmark that transformed a museum from an elite monument to a place of social and cultural exchange. Rogers says he has fond memories of his time in Paris. "Clearly it was a very exciting period. It was a period of political upheaval in the 60s and it was also a period where people were looking at how to repair a city and the society. Paris gave us an opportunity to do a building, which was a very public building, which was my principle interest, but to also heal a small part of a city, which is a pretty unusual thing in your early 30s." Rogers says he did not receive any new commissions for two years after completing the Centre Pompidou and considered giving up on architecture. Since that time, though, he has established offices in Spain and Japan and received commissions from all over the world. Each cabin/character is presented as a book that links to another book that links to another bookThe murder mystery is slowly unraveled through the actions and architecture within the pieces (eg. slicing, rotating, folding, pivoting, etc.). Not since the mid-century House in the Garden series has MoMA built occupiable model buildings to demonstrate contemporary issues to the public. The fives homes erected on the vacant west lot are designed by Kieran Timberlake Associates (Philadelphia); Jeremy Edmiston and Douglas Gauthier (New York); Horden Cherry Lee Architects / Haack + Höpfner Architects (London/Munich); Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture and Planning / Associate Professor Lawrence Sass (Cambridge); and Oskar Leo Kaufmann (Dornbirn, Austria). The exhibition, and its accompanying Web site, display the process of architectural design and production in equal measure with the actual end result. Within the gallery, eighty-four architectural projects spanning 180 years are presented by means of film, architectural models, original drawings and blueprints, fragments, photographs, patents, games, sales materials and propaganda, toys, and partial reconstructions. This diverse collection of material illustrates how the prefabricated house has been, and continues to be, not only a reflection on the house as a replicable object of design but also a critical agent in the discourse of sustainability, architectural invention, and new material and formal research.

Once sold door-to-door, the quality, style and value of lukisan kaca is on the rise. Today, glass painting is enjoying a revival, with the techniques and innovative subject matter making it increasingly popular. The best canvas painter in the world would be challenged to paint on glass. It takes a long time to learn, not least because it involves painting the image in reverse. As the art work is painted on the back of the glass, the front of the design is the first layer seen in the finished piece. Initially, the artist traces intricate details in black ink, with a finished drawing placed underneath the glass a the guide. There are no second takes. Steady patience and a sure hand are essential. The black ink ensures fine details remain distinct after vivid colors are applied. Special paint, normally used for detailing ironwork, ensures resilience and strong permanent color in the painting. Title: NEOCLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE IN GREECE Author: MANOS BIRIS Format: Hardback Details: When Greece was liberated from the Ottoman empire in 1832 following a ten-year war of independence, the new cultural dawn meant new architectural styles. The prevailing European neoclassical style thus returned to Athens where classicism had originated over 2000 years previously. This gorgeous book traces the development of neoclassical architecture in Greece, examining its distinctive forms and arguing that it had a variety of different origins rather than being imposed wholesale by the new regime in 1832. Starting with the reappraisal of classical styles during the Enlightenment, the authors stress the connection between external classical order and the internal organisation of space. Athens was the centre of the new neo-classicism and the brief was not only to reconstruct the damaged capital but also to create a monumentalism worthy of the new Greek state. The University, started in 1839, with its central Ionic porch and colour frieze, is exemplary in its handling of classical order and the functional design of interiors. The Arsakeion girls' school is an example of a more austere classicism, while the Eye Hospital demonstrates Byzantine influence. The monumental reading room of the National Library is one of the finest European classical interiors.
