February 14, 2011 | Timken Lecture Hall Michael Weinstock is director of research and development, and director of emergent technologies and design in the Graduate School of the Architectural Association, London, which won the 2008 ACADIA Award of Excellence for Innovative Academic Programs. Born in Germany, Weinstock lived as a child in the Far East and West Africa, then ran away to sea at age 17. He spent years on traditional wooden sailing ships and learned shipyard and shipbuilding skills. Weinstock is a founding member of the Emergence and Design Group, formed in 2002 as a multidisciplinary research practice. His personal research interests lie in exploring the convergence of emergence, natural systems, evolution, computation, and material sciences, and he has taught and published on these topics in Europe and the United States since 1998. His books include The Architecture of Emergence, Emergent Technologies and Design, and the forthcoming Collective Architectures. Walter Hood founded Hood Design in 1992, in Oakland, California, a studio committed to issues that address the reconstruction of urban landscapes within towns and cities. Hood Design's projects include the acclaimed landscape for the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco; a waterfront promenade project for San Pedro's harbor in Los Angeles; and Poplar Street, a green boulevard in the heart of downtown Macon, Georgia. Hood has worked in a variety of settings, including architecture, landscape architecture, art, and community and urban design, as well as planning and research. He is a professor and former chair of the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning program at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2009, Hood Design received the prestigious National Design Award in Landscape Design from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York.

Their groundbreaking work includes the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, the Serpentine Pavilion in London, the Christian Dior Building in Tokyo, the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Toledo Museum of Art's Glass Pavilion. They won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010 and the Berlin Academy of Arts Kunstpreis in 2007. Nishizawa holds a professorship at Yokohama National University and has maintained his own independent design office since 1997. Toyo Ito creates extreme conceptual architecture, in which he seeks to melt and intertwine the physical and virtual worlds. His key concerns revolve around the equilibrium between private/individual and public/metropolitan, addressing the contemporary notions of the simulated city, the urban nomad, and borderlessness. His smaller housing projects look at architecture as a "dress" for urban individuals--especially in ultra-urban Japan. Born in what is now Seoul, Ito started his own studio, Urban Robot, in 1971; it became Toyo Ito and Associates, Architects in 1979. Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi organised a memorial lecture by renowned artist Jatin Das to celebrate the birth centenary of Dr. MS Randhawa on 2nd February 2009. An exhibition of the photographs and memorabilia of Dr. Randhawa was also compiled and held in collaboration with Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India. This video is the recording of the slide presentation by Shri Jatin Das Jatin Das is a contemporary Indian artist originally from the erstwhile princely state of Mayurbhanj, Orissa. Born on 2nd Dec, 1941, he studied painting at Sir JJ School of Art in Bombay and moved to Delhi in 1968. He has been painting for over 50 years. Jatin draws with conte, paints with oil and water colour, engraves on zinc and copper plates. He has been commissioned to execute many murals in India including the large one for the Indian parliament in New Delhi "Mohenjodaro to Mahatma Gandhi": Five Thousand Years of India. He has also executed steel sculptural installations in India. He has held more than 55 one man shows in India and overseas and participated in National and International group shows, such as Paris Biennale, Venice Biennale, Tokyo Biennale and India Triennale. He has been honoured with two honorary doctorates from two universities. Other than being an artist, he is also a professor of art as well as a poet. He has deep interest in traditional art and his collection of antiquity is being donated to the JD Centre of Art in Bhubaneshwar, established in 1997 ...

Recorded Monday, October 10, 2011, as part of the Architecture Lecture Series at California College of the Arts, Michelle Addington presented in Timken Lecture Hall on the San Francisco campus. Michelle Addington began her career as a structural engineer working for NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center, where she developed structural data for composite materials and designed components for unmanned spacecraft. But when she went back to school for architecture, no one found her background in engineering appealing because it wasn't "creative," so at first she struck it from her resume. Now she is a specialist in discrete systems and technology transfer and an advisor on energy and sustainability for the Department of Energy and the AIA. She is currently the Hines Professor of Sustainable Architectural Design at Yale University and was named one of the country's "Top 10 Faculty in Architecture" by Architect magazine in 2009. Prix, born in Vienna in 1942, a co-founder, Design Principal and CEO of COOP HIMMELB(L)AU. He studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology, the Architectural Association of London, and the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles. After various international teaching assignments he became professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 1993 where he is serving as Vice-Rector, Head of Studio Prix and Dean of the Institute for Architecture. COOP HIMMELB(L)AU is active in architecture, urban planning, design, and art. The architectural designs have been highly acclaimed and featured in many publications, museums and collections worldwide and have also received numerous international awards including the 'RIBA International Award' for the Akron Art Museum and the 'RIBA European Award' for the BMW Welt.In 1988, a second studio was opened in Los Angeles, USA, another project office is located in Frankfurt/Germany. The 2012 Global Practices in Architecture Lecture Series invites expert educators and practitioners from around the world to the Twin Cities to share unique perspectives and insights about the Architecture profession. Known for architecture that is spatially complex and structurally innovative, Dr. Hitoshi Abe is one of the the most important architects in Japan. His firm, Atelier Hitoshi Abe, has designed well-known project ranging from the Miyagi stadium (2000) and the Reihoku community hall, which received the 2003 Architectural Institute of Japan award, to the The Kanno Museum of Art near Sendai, Japan. Dr. Abe earned his M.Arch. from SCI-ARC in Los Angeles in 1988 and his Ph.D. from Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan in 1993. His decade-long distinguished career as a leader in education began at the Tohoku Institute of Technology (Sendai, Japan) where he taught from 1994 to 2007.
