Geodesic dome made from umbrellas leads to spontaneous public street party in Rotterdam (NL) A spontaneous street party in winter? Last Friday evening Feb. 19th the Bucky Bar -- a temporary public building designed by DUS architects was launched. The dome bar made entirely of umbrellas, seemed to appear suddenly out of nowhere around a lamppost in the centre of Rotterdam. The fully equipped bar, complete with DJ and drinks, was built directly on site. Approximately 300 visitors danced despite the cold under the umbrella roof, until at 2:00am when the police ended the party, as there was no permit. The Bucky Bar is part of a series of five unsolicited positive proposals for the future of the city of Rotterdam, that DUS architects in collaboration with SUA (Studio for Unsolicited Architecture) launched on Thursday night by modifying official municipal billboards by pasting their own ideas over the top. The Bucky Bar was first in the series to be realized, made from the most common and yet most unusual of building materials: umbrellas. The title refers to the great American inventor, Buckminster Fuller, who demonstrated how minimal energy geodesic domes could open a way to a more environmentally sustainable future. Lauri Blank Lauri Blank was destined to be a creative soul with a burning passion for art. Raised by an artistic mother who attended design school in NYC, and grandparents that are still performing musicians (well into their 80's), Lauri was constantly engaged by creativity and artistic expression; the foundation of a future art career. The world's first acclaim of this talented artist came when she was just seven. Blank's Mother, having recognized the talent she possessed at such an early age, submitted Lauri's sketch of Betsy Ross to the local newspaper's bicentennial art competition. Her work placed first. Steampunk is a genre which came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternate history such as Victorian era Britain or "Wild West"-era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of HG Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville. Anthony Vidler and Michael Webb Speaking (1) Two Journeys - Works by Michael Webb Spring 2008 Robert Gwathmey Chair in Architecture and Art This exhibition is dedicated to the twenty-six first year students at The Cooper Union in Professor Webb's charge. Having spent the fall 2007 semester learning, through their drawings, who they are, Webb views the exhibition as an opportunity for the students to learn about him and his work. Organized in a linear manner; the exhibit can be read like the pages of a book. It concerns two themes: a train of thought deriving from the Reyner Banham article A Home is not a House (1965), and a study of linear perspective projection. Circa 1963, Webb joined the Archigram Group, a collection of six young architects rebelling against what they saw as an English architectural scene on life support. Through the pages of a magazine, the group produced highly colored images of 'a new architecture that would stand alongside the space capsules, the inflatable structures and the lifestyles of a new generation.' For the last eleven years, an exhibition of the group's work has been touring the world. Originating in Vienna, it visited New York in 1998, Seoul, Korea in 2002, and was mounted in London in 2004. On Feb. 27, 2012, just two days before lecturing at Washington University's Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Wang Shu became the fist Chinese citizen to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, generally considered the profession's highest honor. In this video we look at the Imperial towns in Vvardenfall: Pelagiad, Caldera, and Ebonheart. All of the Imperial towns are somewhat based on a medieval European architectural style, and follow the pattern of a fort overlooking the shops and houses of the town. Ebonheart is slightly different in that it is a port, with no commoner dwellings. If you've played Oblivion, you may note that all of the cities in Cyrodiil, with the exception of the Imperial City, follow the same pattern as Pelagiad and Caldera, with the addition of a Chapel.

A scholar whose work covers both ancient and modern architecture, Professor Scully is a leading commentator on the changing design of urban areas and its effect on the populace. A popular teacher, Professor Scully's courses have drawn as many as 900 undergraduates in a year. DESCRIPTION Desire has no objects, but merely architectures -- organisational devices that structure our experience -- intended to lure into the momentary satisfaction of an idea. If not actually here on show (The Surreal House, Barbican Art Centre), one piece that is vital to the conception of The Surreal House is Duchamp's Étant Donnés: its subject is a fractured body, certainly female and denuded, possibly mutilated. As Jane Alison points out in her introductory text, Étant Donnés is an investigation of the relationship between architecture and desire: "We can say with some certainty... that eroticism and architecture were the mainstays of Duchamp's decidedly non-retinal practice..." Watson and Haralambidou will argue that in order to understand the part played by the fragmented body in the architecture of Étant Donnés it is necessary to define the critical and indeed political nature of Duchamp's non-retinal practice. For Duchamp retinal practice referred to habitual architectures, originating in the Italian Renaissance, which had developed around and out of acts of building, viewing and painting. Nine young designers from across the North have been named winners in the Northern Design Competition 2009, hosted by Leeds Met. An awards ceremony was held on 18 June in the University's flagship building, The Rose Bowl with special guest Ricky Wilson, Leeds Met alumnus and Kaiser Chiefs frontman, returning to the University to award the prize for Young Northern Designer. The overall winner - the Maurice Miller Northern Design Champion - as chosen by chair of judges, Red or Dead founder Wayne Hemingway, was Leeds University student Emily Dick with her entry Oh I do like to be beside the seaside (Clarence Pier) after she was named winner of the photography category. Emily, 21, from Warwick, said: "I am genuinely shocked to have won the category let alone the overall prize. It's so important for people to get their pride in Britain back and that's what my entry was about. It's an age-old principle that is at the heart of the adidas SLVR Spring/Summer 2013 collection inspired by martial arts, Fight Club, and the human physique. Consequently the new campaign presents the collection against a raw, make-shift backdrop. Photographed by Willy Vanderperre, the campaign depicts group compositions shot against a set in constant flux, continuing an architectural yet loose look. The imagery communicates Dirk Schönberger's high-fashion perspective, combining precision tailoring with a sport attitude. The campaign extends this idea by presenting a fusion of seemingly opposing references like Hawaiian prints with boxing silhouettes. This clash illustrates the amalgamation of tailoring and sportswear as the core of the SLVR collection. The Spring/Summer 2013 video translates the concept into motion. Climaxing to silence, the edit uses acceleration of pace and raw distortion effects to merge the various looks into one contrasting edit. The first Goetheanum, a monumental double-domed wooden structure, richly carved and painted within, was begun in 1913. It opened in 1920 and was destroyed by fire on New Year's Eve 1922/23. In 1924 Rudolf Steiner presented his model for a second Goetheanum the present one made of reinforced concrete. Constructed between 1925 and 1928, it was the first large-scale building to employ this material for sculptural forms. Both buildings are based on an architectural concept in which each element, form and color bears an inner relation to the whole and the whole flows organically into its single elements in a process of metamorphosis. The second Goetheanum and its neighboring buildings were designed to harmonize with the local topography the movement of the terrain and the rocky spurs of the Jura mountains visible from the Birs river valley, ten kilometers southeast of Basel. High colored windows and the central west window indicate the large Main Auditorium and emphasise the uniqueness of its artistic and architectural qualities. A glance inside reveal the expressive power of architecture, interior design, color and space. East of the Auditorium and the stairwells, behind the stage is the wardrobe department with rooms for the creation, upkeep and storage of costumes, rehearsal stages and practice rooms, stage technology, and prop storage.
