A profile of the work and practice of Roger Diener Tube. Duration : 5.13 Mins.
The Swiss architect Roger Diener reflects on 30 years of practice and key projects, which he still struggles to feel proud of. 'I was always interested in art and architecture as a boy, and today collaborations with artists are really important for us. The Swiss Embassy in Berlin shows the two collaborative strategies we experienced as architects: one to share the experience of a design from the very first day, like we did with Helmut Federle; and the other is with the an artist who joins the site only once the architecture is given, as we did successfully with Pipilotti Rist.' Roger Diener took over the Swiss architecture practice his father founded. Known for their subtle, sophisticated Modernist buildings and town plans, Diener & Diener have recently begun to design buildings that add a new lightness and liveliness to the geometric rigor and intellectual clarity that have always characterized their designs.

A profile of Wim Crouwel: the Dutch graphic designer Video Clips. Duration : 3.93 Mins.
"For me it is always a question of thinking before sketching," explains Wim Crouwel, the Dutch graphic designer. "A design ripens in my head, and then I see it more or less in front of me, before I take a pencil and do it on paper". Phaidon.com caught up with Crouwel in Utrecht at Schröder House - designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a name that was familiar to Crouwel as a student at art school (and who would later become an acquaintance). In a career spanning more than 60 years, Crouwel discusses how he was influenced by the Swiss design movement of the 1950s and how he became a graphic designer, known to his friends as 'grid-nick': "I developed a kind of grid in which my design would take shape. It's very architectural because I'm influenced as much by architecture as by other graphic designers and artists."
