THE NEW SCHOOL | www.newschool.edu Lucy Skaer is an artist working in sculpture, photography, installation, printmaking, and film who displaces the familiar by manipulating scale and material. Her works embrace multiplicity and abstraction while questioning day-to-day perceptions and assumptions about the world. Through transformations of artifacts and architectural elements, Skaer's work re-imagines and rematerializes history, disorienting the viewer and calling into question the reliability of memory and history itself. Skaer's sculpture and works on paper create a linguistic system that merges subject and object, favoring open-ended gestures over specific references. Born in Cambridge, England, in 1975, Skaer lives in New York. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and has had solo exhibitions at Murray Guy, New York; the Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh; Kunsthalle Basel, Switzerland; and Chisenhale Gallery, London. Skaer's work has been included in numerous international exhibitions, including the 52nd Venice Biennale, the 5th Berlin Biennale; it has also been displayed in recent group exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and K21 Düsseldorf. "The Journey" is a lighting sculpture (2010) designed by Robert Foster of Fink and co in collaboration with Frost* and Coolon lighting. LED's inside the plexiglas forms change colour with preprogrammed DMX sequences 24/7 and interact to viewers movement using 5 motion sensors. Installation of 'Na Fáná Fuachtmhar', a new sculpture by Kevin O'Dwyer, artist in residence at the Sixth World Archaeological Congress at University College Dublin. With an excerpt from UCD Scholarcast. Na Fáná Fuachtmhar was inspired by the incised chevron motifs found inside the Megalithic Passage Tomb at Fourknocks, Co. Meath. The chevron motif, a symbol common to many cultures throughout the world dating from the Neolithic period, is suggestive of the W-shaped constellation, Cassiopeia, which would have been visible through the passage tomb between 3000BC and 2500BC. Na Fáná Fuachtmhar incorporates this ancient symbol into a series of strong architectural forms as a contemporary play on the great standing stones found in Neolithic settlements throughout Europe. The sculpture celebrates the interrelationship between art and archaeology explored during the Sixth World Archaeology Conference at University College Dublin in 2008.

This work attempts to further develop the Inflatables technology while creating a new dialogue between man, machine, and architecture. In this work, I am modeling nature on a microscopic, fractal level. It comprises a system of plug-and-play, inflatable, musculoskeletal modules which allow me to design a series of transformative organic structures influenced by the exhibition space. The modular components can be freely connected and rearranged to produce sculptures of varied size, form, complexity and interactive possibility. The "live" sections of the form are equipped with a simple sensing system that forces the sculpture into action. Your bodys motion in passing through the space functions as a type of force field that pushes the sculptures bones away from you as you are sensed, keeping the sculpture at a constant distance from you. Each bone can be selectively animated by the viewers movements allowing for endless interactive possibilities. If you are so inclined, your motion enables you to open it up, creating portals in that let you in and close behind you, giving an extremely different vantage point: life from the inside. In this way, the work is influenced by the nature of the environment—the space—as well as by the audience participants, who are engaged both physically and aesthetically with the constantly transforming structure.

When one hears the name 'Alexander Calder', an image of kinetic hanging mobiles immediately comes to mind. However, mobiles were only a portion of Calder's vast body of work: He also painted and created stationary pieces called "stabiles." Often, they resembled his mobiles — but without moving parts. In this lesson, students will create a "stabile" using Taskboard, a new, natural, wood-based medium used by architects and 3-D designers to create models.
