Tom Patti is a widely respected artist who has devoted much of his career to researching different formulations of glasses and hot-forming techniques and to exploring industrial and architectural glass as a sculptural medium. Over the last 35 years, he has used glass to build and define spaces that transform surface, light, and color. In recent years, Patti has dramatically shifted the scale of his work from complex, small-scale objects to illusionistic environments made of architectural glass.

Sacred Catholic wood carvings of Saints Peter, Paul, and the Four Evangelists explained by the artist A.Vonn Hartung. These high relief wood carvings were completed in August of 2008 for the Ambo (pulpit) of St. Paul Catholic Church in Pensacola, Florida for Father Doug Halsema through the Liturgical art & architectural consultant Dr. Steven Schloeder. The saints are all directed towards the center of the Ambo, as though they are again listening to and reliving the truth and reality of Christ Jesus that because of them and through them the gift of the Holy Spirit continues to live in us in the Liturgy of the Word. "For me it is always a question of thinking before sketching," explains Wim Crouwel, the Dutch graphic designer. "A design ripens in my head, and then I see it more or less in front of me, before I take a pencil and do it on paper". Phaidon.com caught up with Crouwel in Utrecht at Schröder House - designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a name that was familiar to Crouwel as a student at art school (and who would later become an acquaintance). In a career spanning more than 60 years, Crouwel discusses how he was influenced by the Swiss design movement of the 1950s and how he became a graphic designer, known to his friends as 'grid-nick': "I developed a kind of grid in which my design would take shape. It's very architectural because I'm influenced as much by architecture as by other graphic designers and artists."

Today Ill be creating an abstract pencil rendering of machine parts. Ill be using a .5mm Pentel mechanical pencil with HB leads. You can also use a slightly larger diameter lead with a .7mm pencil, but I like the thinner line. The other type of pencil you may choose is a lead holder drafting pencil. These are a little trickier because youve got to keep them sharpened. Ill also be using 4 different lead pencils. These are all Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils. Theres the 2h the lightest and hardest I will be using, an HB which is the typical hardness on most pencils, and a 2b and 4b both progressively softer and darker. Ill be using a small sized adjustable triangle, a ruler and drafting tape. I also have some templates I really like to use as well as a compass, an electric eraser and metal eraser shield. So, Ive cut out a small rectangular piece of Strathmore 400 series drawing paper. This paper is a little thin for my taste, but it has a nice texture and its acid free so it should have a nice lifespan. Im a classically trained artist so I like to use the golden section and the root rectangles as the drawn armature on my page. I do this in to help me organize and develop my drawing but thats for another episode. The piece of paper is the same proportion as a rootphi rectangle. Tom Fisher - Dean of the University of Minnesota's College of Design Thomas Fisher is a Professor and Dean of the College of Design at the University of Minnesota. Educated at Cornell University in architecture and Case Western Reserve University in intellectual history, he previously served as the Editorial Director of Progressive Architecture magazine in Stamford, Connecticut. He has lectured or juried at many schools and professional societies, and has published over two dozen book chapters and over 250 articles. In this lesson plan, students design and construct a 3-dimensional structure using their initial or other significant letter. The surface can be decorated with descriptive words and images that are personally meaningful and unique to the student's identity. Instead of wet, messy adhesive, this process uses paper packing tape to create papier mâché. This tape is inexpensive, easy, and tidy to use, and the finished letters are hard and durable. Assistant Professor Anders Carlson is the Director of the Chase L. Leavitt Graduate Building Science Program at the USC School of Architecture. He has a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Caltech researching damage to tall steel moment frame buildings due to the Northridge Earthquake. Anders is also a licensed structural engineer and Staff Consultant at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger with over 17 years experience in design of steel, concrete, composite, and light framed wood structures. His work has encompassed a broad range of project types including civic, educational, healthcare, office, retail, government, and residential. Project sizes have ranged from sculptures to highrises. He has worked on notable projects such as Koolhaas' Seattle Public Library, Libeskind's Hamilton Building of the Denver Art Museum, the investigation of the collapse of WTC-7 and the first buckling restrained braced frame building in the United States. Speed of Light installation Immersive and interactive, the specially created light installation has been placed over four different levels of the Bargehouse by the renowned light artists to mark the ten year anniversary of broadband being available to everyone in Britain. Central Los Angeles Area High School #9 offers core education for grades 9-12 as well as courses in the visual arts, performing arts, music, and dance. To do justice to its mission as a public institution, the school campus also incorporates a public theater that seats nearly 1000 visitors, a facility which has previously been missing in the cultural offering of downtown Los Angeles. The school for approximately 1800 pupils is organized into four academies and comprises seven buildings: the theater building, library, cafeteria, and four classroom buildings—one for each of the artistic disciplines taught here. The design concept was to employ architectural signs to communicate the Los Angeles community's commitment to art. The point of departure for the urban arrangement of the buildings was the central and visually exposed location of the site, divided from Grand Avenue only by the 101 Freeway—one of the most heavily traveled roads to pass through the downtown area of Los Angeles. Through the four classroom buildings, the master plan sets out an orthogonal arrangement that obtains additional spatial tension through the three special buildings for the library, lobby, and theater tower.

In 1989 he founded Field Operations, now a leading landscape architecture and urban design practice based in New York City. Field Operations comprises nearly 30 professionals, many with cross-disciplinary backgrounds in landscape architecture, urban design, architecture and communication art. In addition Corner is the chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. Gian Lorenzo Bernini (also spelled Gianlorenzo or Giovanni Lorenzo) (Naples, 7 December 1598 -- Rome, 28 November 1680) was an Italian artist who worked principally in Rome. He was the leading sculptor of his age and also a prominent architect. In addition he painted, wrote plays, and designed metalwork and stage sets. A student of Classical sculpture, Bernini possessed the unique ability to capture, in marble, the essence of a narrative moment with a dramatic naturalistic realism which was almost shocking. This ensured that he effectively became the successor of Michelangelo, far outshining other sculptors of his generation, including his rival, Alessandro Algardi. His talent extended beyond the confines of his sculpture to consideration of the setting in which it would be situated; his ability to synthesise sculpture, painting and architecture into a coherent conceptual and visual whole has been termed by the art historian Irving Lavin the 'unity of the visual arts'. Hangzhou urban planning bureau has announced MVRDV winner of the international design competition for the China Comic and Animation Museum (CCAM) in Hangzhou, China. MVRDV won with a design referring to the speech balloon: a series of eight speech balloon shaped volumes create an internally complex museum experience of in total 32.000m2. Part of the project is also a series of parks on islands, a public plaza and a 13.000m2 expo centre. Construction start is envisioned for 2012, the total budget is 92 million Euro. Comics and animations have long been considered a form of entertainment for the younger generations but develop more and more into a sophisticated art form. The initiative for a museum especially for this relatively recent art form creates a platform which will unite the worlds of art and entertainment. By using one of the cartoon's prime characteristics -- the speech balloon -- the building will instantly be recognized as place for cartoons, comics and animations. The neutral speech balloon becomes 3d. The 32.000m2 are divided into eight volumes which are interconnected allowing for a circular visit of the entire program. Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (GGN) is a landscape architecture practice based in Seattle, Washington. The 2011 recipient of the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt's National Design Award in Landscape Architecture, GGN was founded in 1999 by partners Jennifer Guthrie, Shannon Nichol, and Kathryn Gustafson. GGN's work is highly varied in scale and type -- from furniture, like the Maggie Bench, to campuses and master plans, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the 2011 Downtown Cleveland Group Plan. GGN offers special experience in designing high-use landscapes in complex, urban contexts. Boston's North End Parks, over the I-93 freeway, and Millennium Park's Lurie Garden, on a 5-story parking structure, are examples of GGN's designs for accessible, healthy, and sculptural urban spaces on rooftops and other urban structures. The landform of each space is carefully shaped to feel serenely grounded in its context and comfortable at all times -- whether bustling with crowds, offering moments of contemplation, or doing both at once. The city district Amsterdam Osdorp recently merged with Slotervaart and Geuzenveld-Slotermeer and was given the name Amsterdam Nieuw-West. This change also meant the end of 20 years of restructuring urbanized areas. To celebrate everything achieved, a book was published. 'The Metamorphosis of Osdorp' gives an overview of the architectural highlights. We were asked to create an intriguing video, featuring the buildings we find most characteristic. Restructuring urbanized areas isn't all about aesthetics. That is why we chose to put emphasis on the architects and especially it's inhabitants and the surrounding of the buildings. To achieve this, we decided to combine live action video with 2D- and 3D-animation. Herewith we were able to complement reality with our interpretation of the most important factors of restructuring urbanized areas. Gustav Stickley and the American Arts & Crafts Movement offers the first comprehensive examination of the life and work of the recognized patriarch of the American Arts & Crafts movement, Gustav Stickley. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue explore Stickley as a business leader and design proselytizer, whose body of work included furnishings, architectural and interior designs, and related imagery that became synonymous with the movement that was at its height between approximately 1880 and 1910. This exhibition includes over 100 works produced by Stickley's designers and workshops, including furniture, metalwork, lighting, and textiles, along with drawings and related designs. Also featured in the exhibition is a re-creation of Stickley's seminal model dining room from his 1903 Syracuse Arts & Crafts exhibition.

In the tradition of notable Pacific Palisades architecture that includes Richard Neutra, Charles Moore, Ray Kappe and A. Quincy Jones, Predock_Frane has devised an architectural hybrid combining the 'courtyard' and 'hillside' California residential prototypes. The newly completed house has been published in the Los Angeles Times and was featured on a recent AIA Home Tour. The home's formal street elevation gives way to open, casual interior spaces, which follow the descending contours of the lushly landscaped site to a shaded glen at the rear. The design makes much of its connection between the inside and the outdoors, using an array of skylights and windows at the perimeter and an internal court to distribute daylight and provide natural ventilation throughout. Thermal efficiency is enhanced by dual-glazed windows and on the south façade, recessed within deep, shade-giving walls. A layered exterior wall system protects the house from excessive heat and moisture. Rainwater shed from the metal standing seam roof passes from concealed gutters through a state-of-the-art filtration. Interior architectural features include high ceiling planes that delicately echo the sculptural folds of the roof; a freestanding fireplace mounted on a glass floor, stainless steel appliances in a Boffi-outfitted kitchen, oak flooring and a variety of built-in shelving and cabinetry. Nader Khalili (1936-2008) is the world-renowned Iranian-American architect, author, humanitarian, teacher, and innovator of the Geltaftan Earth-and-Fire system known as Ceramic Houses, and of the Superadobe construction system. Khalili received his philosophy and architectural education in Iran, Turkey, and the United States. Khalili was the founder and director of the Geltaftan Foundation (1986), and the California Institute of Earth Art and Architecture (Cal-Earth) (1991). At Cal-Earth. Khalili taught his philosophy and earth architecture techniques. How to make a silver wire "Greek Link" necklace; in this video I demonstrate how to construct this beautiful necklace in easy to follow, step by step instructions. Visit www.watercolorjewelry.com to learn more about my jewelry creations. To create the "Greek Link" necklace that you see me construct in this video, I used .035 sterling silver wire, soft, round. This is my favorite metal to work with, but you may also experiment with the many colored wires available at craft stores. I particularly like Black Stove Pipe wire. Black wire gives this necklace a distinctively unique look. A wire that I recently discovered is Niobium, which is a hypo-allergenic metal, easy to work with, and available in many anodized colors. The construction of this necklace requires the use of three different types of pliers, round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, and diagonal cutters. I also use a fine jewelry file to file the ends of the cut metal wire, eliminating any sharp edges, and a two ounce ball peen hammer to work the metal. Each "Greek Link" is constructed from an eight inch length of silver wire, and the links are attached to one another using a bridging link. The bridging link also permits the incorporation of beads. To complete the necklace, I attach a hand-made fish hook clasp to one end, and a figure-8 link to the other end. Obscura Digital is changing the way humans interact with and experience scientific data. The exhibit will generate awareness about the importance of supporting successful discussions at the United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP15), and will give a public voice to the deliberations through a customized YouTube communications platform on the cube, where messages from all corners of the world can be experienced, said Chris Di Cesare, Chief Marketing Officer of YouTube. The exhibit is powered by Google and YouTube to amplify the conversations happening in Copenhagen so that more people can access the dialogue taking place on environmental sustainability, one of the UN Millennium Development Goals. The cube is constructed of 12 shipping containers stacked in an interlocking pattern on a custom engineered floatation barge. HASSELBLAD CENTER 5SEPT - 25OCT 2009. The Swedish artist Mikael Olsson has in his latest project been exploring the heritage of Bruno Mathsson, one of Swedish modernism's leading designers, through two of his architectural works. In Frösakull -- a house that Mathsson both designed and lived in Olsson has interacted with the remains of the house, and like Mathsson he has experimented with the house and its possibilities. The result is a collection of images which show us an interpretation of an architectonic legacy. Olsson has arranged and transformed the rooms into a stage, often using light, emptiness and shadow as the only props. The Södrakull residence, which had been closed off since Mathsson passed away, is approached in a different way: as a voyeur. The interiors are photographed from the outside and through half-drawn curtains. Olsson is here a surreptitious observer rather than participator and the images reflect an outsider's fettered view of a private domain. In this body of work Olsson has created an interplay between presence and absence, inner meaning and representation. The images are marked both by intimacy and distance. Together they form a sort of portrait, as well as a chronicle of architecture, remembrance and aging. For this reason the photographs cannot be considered documentary but instead a very subjective depiction of Mathsson's public and private legacy.

Clambering in, on and amongst the greatest buildings, ruins and cities in Europe, Kevin uncovers the dark underbelly of the Tour in the shady alleys and drinking dens along its route, and explores the Tours lasting legacy. Kevin charts how each age pursued both the sacred and the profane in their travels abroad. Starting with the earliest 17th century travellers in northern Italy, charting the high point of the Tour in the 18th century in Florence and Rome then working his way through Naples and ancient Greece, Kevins journey ends with the last Grand Tourists of the early 19th century in the Alps. Climbing up buildings in harnesses, snaking through mountain passes and recreating the meals they took en route, and taking along his own sketchbook in which to draw the sites, Kevin travels as they travelled and revels in the sights, sounds, tastes and smells that changed the way Britain lived.

Architecture firm In Square Lab, post production company MPC Digital and software development company Existential create 4th dimension motion recognitive shop window art installation project Urban Prairie is an intuitive and interactive motion recognitive installation conceived and designed collaboratively by London architecture firm ın square lab, post production and visual effects specialist MPC Digital and software developer Existential for the London Festival of Architecture 2010. Inspired by the rapid reduction of green spaces due to urbanisation of cities, Urban Prairie seeks to recreate a 1000sqm sea of prairie from a 5m wide shop window. Green spaces are known to have positive effects on the image and vitality of spaces and provide valuable resources and focus for the communities. Green spaces provide a respite from the built environment and give an opportunity for recreation; promote health, well-being and quality of life. In this project, the main challenge for the team was to create a system that allows for maintaining or even extending the notion of green spaces through intelligent use of design and technology via 4th dimension (time + space) design.
