Famed Artists Transform Lance Armstrongs Cycles into Works of Art Video Clips. Duration : 3.25 Mins.

November 2009, New York City: The saying Its About The Bike took on a new meaning as seven-time Tour de France champion and cycling icon Lance Armstrong raised .3 million to benefit LIVESTRONG a organization founded by Armstrong, a cancer survivor, to empower and inspire others affected by cancer. The special auction took place at a Sothebys in New York City. The Its About the Bike auction featured seven of Lance Armstrongs bikes used in competition, six of which were rendered into works of art by six world renowned artists: KAWS, Kenny Scharf, Shepard Fairey, Marc Newson, Yoshitomo Nara, and Damien Hirst. Also up for auction was Lances 1274 Stolen Bike a bike specially designed for competition in his first ever Tour of California race in February, 2009. Each artist incorporated themes which drew inspiration from Lances numerous athletic accomplishments as well as his ongoing charity work through LIVESTRONG to empower cancer survivors. Among the surrealistic designs emblazoned on Lances cycles were: · KAWS homage to classic vintage racing bikes · Kenny Scharfs vision of a cycle as a space travelling machine · Shepard Faireys use of classical Italian architectural details · Marc Newsons vision of movement as depicted a stroboscopic rear wheel design that appears to pulse as it spins · Yoshitomo Naras cartoon motifs which includes a moving inspirational message across the tube of the bikes frame which proclaims never forget your beginners spirit · Damien Hirsts real ...

Artist's Talk: Sarah Sze Tube. Duration : 5.43 Mins.

SARAH SZE 11/02/2012 - 16/09/2012 @ Mudam Luxembourg - Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean Over the past fifteen years, the New York artist Sarah Sze has single-mindedly created a body of work consisting mostly of large-scale, intricate installations. Her works, always specifically conceived for the exhibition venue in question, are for the most part made up of a huge variety of everyday objects. These, however, are by no means chosen at random, but selected with great precision on the basis of their formal qualities or, sometimes, their ambiguity. In addition to ready-made objects, she also uses hand-made constructions out of "lowly" materials such as matches, thread or paper. These constructions, often seemingly arranged according to archival principles of order, give a coherent structure to the whole. Sarah Sze's works form open universes comprising an archaeological diversity of encyclopedic dimensions. They possess the precision of architectural constructions, the formal and colouristic subtlety of pictorial compositions and the quality of spatial motion displayed by multifaceted sculptures. They achieve this by adding an almost musical dimension to the spatiotemporal process of each viewer's individual perception. Moreover, Sarah Sze orchestrates an abundance of details into complex single motifs, visual melodies contrastive figures, formal counterpoints and an overall composition of airy monumentality. Inspired by Japanese-Chinese horticultural art, the artist ...

Starving Artists - WRITING THE FILM MUSICAL Video Clips. Duration : 12.00 Mins.

This screenplay by Michael Giese & David Ladr, with music & lyrics by Roshann Lund & Casey Kidd, was created during the 2011 'Writing the Film Musical" course given by Diane Lake, assistant professor at Emerson College, Boston, and Michael Wartofsky, professor at Berklee College of Music. The course won the first Pro Arts Consortium Classroom Connect Award, for the most innovative course design by faculty collaborating across multiple ProArts schools. The course matches Berklee songwriters--composers and lyricists--with Emerson screenwriters to create original screenplays with songs. Students study the screenplays of a variety of film musicals from the beginning of the genre to the present. Working in teams, writing students from Emerson complete an outline and first act of an original screenplay, and composers and lyricists from Berklee write songs to help tell that story. The semester ends with staged readings—with music—performed by acting/musical theatre students from both Berklee and Emerson. WRITING THE FILM MUSICAL will next be offered Fall 2012. (Deer Valley Rock Art Center) Architecture: Archinect Travels Episode 4 Tube. Duration : 11.75 Mins.

From Unbeige.com "Last year, Archinect editor Marlin Watson, a self-described "disillusioned architect," embarked on a cross-country road trip with a video camera to find out what we talk about when we talk about architecture in America. In December, he finally started posting his discoveries as the new feature Archinect Travels. Part travelogue, part documentary, Watson's incredibly personal narration and nice camera work make good companions for this journey, which he explains like this: This is an architectural sabbatical, beginning and ending in Los Angeles and traveling as far east as Chicago. We'll make the land a large museum and each building site will become objects for study and scrutiny. The first tour of duty takes us through the American Southwest, from the modernist epicenter of Los Angeles to the magical money-spewing castles of Laughlin, Nevada; from Taliesin West to the cliffside dwellings outside Sedona. Download the episodes for your iPod/iPhone and stay tuned for future episodes, including a tour of Minneapolis with Ralph Nelson and Dan Clark of LOOM, the Nelson-Atkins museum in KC, Lake Shore Drive in Chicago, the Morphosis courthouse in Oregon, and hitchhiking on a golf cart with America's most famous architect. Hmmm, now who could that be?" Thanks for watching! EPISODE 5 and the rest of the story can be found at: www.archinect.com/travels

Architectural Sketching and Rendering: Techniques for Designers and Artists

Do you want to become more confident sketching buildings with a pencil or pen? How about refining your skill in rendering the projects you are designing? Whether you are a designer, an architect, an artist or a student interested in architecture, this volume, filled with a broad range of sketching and rendering techniques and styles, offers the complete intermediate level of instruction that you need.

How to achieve effects with pencils and pens is covered in Part 1. The various types of media, including charcoal and ink brushes, are discussed in detail, as well as the different papers, boards, and accessories you'll need. A series of exercises shows you how to draw lines, shapes, textures, and tones and then combine them in renderings. A special sequence is included on how to do freehand perspective drawing.

Techniques and examples of capturing buildings, interiors, and land- and cityscapes are thoroughly explored in Part 2. For instance, drawings of such highly respected architects as Henry Hobson Richardson, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, Raymond Hood, Julia Morgan, Eliel Saarinen, Mies van der Rohe, Robert Venturi, and Michael Graves are included in the section on buildings. Different types of furniture for the home are shown in the section on interiors, with a special emphasis on the traditional to meet today's renewed interest in historic styles. The array of interior spaces ranges from the S. Maria Maggiore in Rome to Paul Rudolph's Chapel for Tuskegee Institute. Drawing trees (from palms to pines), water, skies, clouds, snow are covered in the section on landscapes, and a special demonstration sequence shows you how to draw cityscapes from photographs.

Three personal approaches are given an in-depth review in Part 3. Hugh Ferriss is known for the soaring skyscrapers he so dramatically rendered during the 20s when they were first being built. The process that the designer goes through in creating a finished project is shown in Norman Diekman's work, while the wit and whimsy of Paul Hogarth's caricatures show you how to make even tired wooden buildings sag with interest.

Profusely illustrated with 325 illustrations, Architectural Sketching and Rendering is required reading if you want to learn how to create your own successful drawings. ...Read more

Elegantissima: The Design and Typography of Louise Fili

Elegantissima: The Design and Typography of Louise Fili Overviews
Louise Fili has been an inspiration for designers around the world since the 1980s, when she raised the bar on book cover design, creating close to two thousand jackets as art director for Pantheon Books. In 1989 Fili founded her own graphic design studio, Louise Fili Ltd, and branched out into the fields of restaurant and food packaging design. Her lavish and elegant typography, often hand drawn, helps advertise and market such well-known brands as Sarabeth's, Bella Cucina, Jean-Georges, and Good Housekeeping, among many others. Known for her intense attention to detail, her fresh reinterpretation of vintage sources, and her passion for all things Italian, Fili has won numerous awards. Elegantissima, the first monograph on her work, covers the breadth of her nearly forty-year design career and is a must-have for graphic design students and professionals, as well as anyone interested in advertising, food, restaurants, Italy, and books.

The Map as Art: Contemporary Artists Explore Cartography Overviews
As seen in O: The Oprah Magazine, the New York Times Book Review, USA Today, Cool Hunting, and countless other media outlets, The Map as Art is available now in a paperback edition. This volume by Katharine Harmon, author of our best-selling book You Are Here, extends that book's celebration of mapmaking to the world of artists' maps.

It is little surprise that in an era of globalized politics, culture, and ecology contemporary artists are drawn to mapsto express their visions. Using paint, salt, souvenir tea towels, or their own bodies, map artists explore a world free ofgeographical constraints. In The Map as Art, Harmon collects 360 colorful, map-related artistic visions by well-known artists—such as Ed Ruscha, Julian Schnabel, Olafur Eliasson, William Kentridge, and Vik Muniz—and many more less-familiar artists for whom maps are the inspiration for creating art. Essays by Gayle Clemans bring an in-depth look into the artists' maps of Joyce Kozloff, Landon Mackenzie, Ingrid Calame, Guillermo Kuitca, and Maya Lin. Together, the beautiful reproductions and telling commentary make this an essential volume for anyone open to exploring new paths.
