Excerpts from a guided tour led by Mirko Zardini of the exhibition 1973: Sorry, Out of Gas at the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Organised by the CCA, this major exhibition and its accompanying catalogue are the first to study the architectural innovation spurred by the 1973 oil crisis, when the value of oil increased exponentially and triggered economic, political, and social upheaval across the world. Featuring over 350 objects including architectural drawings, photographs, books and pamphlets, archival television footage, and historical artefacts, the exhibition maps the global response to the shortage and its relevance to architecture today. Anka Zhuravleva (born Anna Belova) was born on December 4, 1980. She spent her childhood with books on art and her mothers' drawing tools, covering acres of paper with her drawings. In 1997 she entered the Moscow Architectural Institute deciding to follow in her mothers' footsteps. But at the end of 1997 her mother was diagnosed with cancer and died in less that a year. Then her father died in 1999. After that Anka's life changed dramatically. In attempt to keep sane, she plunged into an alternative lifestyle -- working as a tattoo artist, singing in a rock-band, sometimes looking for escape in alcohol. In order to make a living while studying, Anka worked at several modeling agencies. Thanks to the drawing lessons she wasn't afraid to pose nude, and her photos appeared in the Playboy and XXL magazines and at the Playboy 1999 photo exhibition. But she was not looking for a modeling career -- it was just a way to make some money. In 2001 Anka was working in the post-production department at the Mosfilm Studios. That same winter one of her colleagues invited her to spend a week-end in Saint-Petersburg with his friend, composer and musician Alexander Zhuravlev. In less than a month Anka said farewell to Moscow, her friends, her Mosfilm career and moved in with Alexander in Saint-Petersburg. The Avenida Cambó [41°23'11N-02°10'40E], the area where the project is located, is an isolated fragment from the main lines of the urban tissue then returns to life after years of isolation and marginalization. The project, begun as restoration of the old market, has expanded to include the redevelopment of the entire district on an urban scale, the proposal sought by designers EMBT architects (Enric Miralles & Benedetta Tagliabue [www.mirallestagliabue.com and well received by the client, l'Ayuntamento de Barcelona. Born in 1970 in La Jolla, California, Tom Wiscombe is an architectural designer based in Los Angeles. In 1999, he founded EMERGENT, a platform for researching issues of materiality, technology, and systems through built form. EMERGENT is particularily interested in destratifying space— in creating new architectures through the generation of coherent, operational relationships between buildings components and building systems. The work is positioned within the larger paradigm of systems theory, emergence science, and the philosophical discussion of part and whole. EMERGENT recently won second place in the international competition for the Seoul Performing Arts Center. Their work was showcased in a solo show at the UCLA Architecture Gallery entitled 'Notes on Micromultiplicity' in early 2005. Other exhibitions include the MoMA San Francisco show 'Glamour: Fabricating Affluence' in 2004, ArchiLAB (Orléan) in 2003 and 2001, and MoMA Queens in 2003. Their work is part of the permanent collections of the FRAC Centre (Paris) as well as of MoMA San Francisco and recently, MoMA New York. Giotto di Bondone (12671337) is credited with first treating a painting as a window into space, but it was not until the writings of architects Filippo Brunelleschi (13771446) and Leon Battista Alberti (14041472) that perspective was formalized as an artistic technique.[30] The development of perspective was part of a wider trend towards realism in the arts.[31] To that end, painters also developed other techniques, studying light, shadow, and, famously in the case of Leonardo da Vinci, human anatomy.
