In her weekly "Design" column, published every Monday, Alice explores new directions in every area of design and their impact on our lives. Her column is syndicated to other newspapers and magazines worldwide. She also writes the "Object Lesson" column for the New York Times Magazine. Alice graduated in art and architectural history from Cambridge University in the UK and became a journalist. Her first job was at Campaign, a British magazine that covers media. In 1986 she joined the Financial Times and pioneered its coverage of the creative industries during a period of dramatic change for newspapers and journalism. From 2001 to 2006 Alice was director of the Design Museum in London. During her directorship, the number of visits to the museum rose by 40 percent, participation in the education program doubled, and the Design Museum Web site became the world's most popular design site. She is also very involved with the arts, as a trustee of Arts Council England, the Whitechapel Gallery in London, and other arts organizations.

Geodesic dome made from umbrellas leads to spontaneous public street party in Rotterdam (NL) A spontaneous street party in winter? Last Friday evening Feb. 19th the Bucky Bar -- a temporary public building designed by DUS architects was launched. The dome bar made entirely of umbrellas, seemed to appear suddenly out of nowhere around a lamppost in the centre of Rotterdam. The fully equipped bar, complete with DJ and drinks, was built directly on site. Approximately 300 visitors danced despite the cold under the umbrella roof, until at 2:00am when the police ended the party, as there was no permit. The Bucky Bar is part of a series of five unsolicited positive proposals for the future of the city of Rotterdam, that DUS architects in collaboration with SUA (Studio for Unsolicited Architecture) launched on Thursday night by modifying official municipal billboards by pasting their own ideas over the top. The Bucky Bar was first in the series to be realized, made from the most common and yet most unusual of building materials: umbrellas. The title refers to the great American inventor, Buckminster Fuller, who demonstrated how minimal energy geodesic domes could open a way to a more environmentally sustainable future. Could an umbrella dome to lead the way to a more socially sustainable future? The Bucky Bar is a full-scale model of such a future. Lauri Blank Lauri Blank was destined to be a creative soul with a burning passion for art. Raised by an artistic mother who attended design school in NYC, and grandparents that are still performing musicians (well into their 80's), Lauri was constantly engaged by creativity and artistic expression; the foundation of a future art career. The world's first acclaim of this talented artist came when she was just seven. Blank's Mother, having recognized the talent she possessed at such an early age, submitted Lauri's sketch of Betsy Ross to the local newspaper's bicentennial art competition. Her work placed first. Looking to expand her artistic horizons, Lauri began experimenting with different types of media. A few years later, at the age of 12, Lauri was honored by The Norton Museum of Art who included her three-dimensional painting of a young woman aging slowly in their prestigious national exhibition. Continuing on her path of creative exploration, Lauri became a successful model at 14, still painting whenever she could. Lauri absorbed all the written material she could acquire on the arts. She spent the next several years honing her skills privately while gracing the covers of magazines, catwalks and advertising campaigns. Steampunk is a genre which came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternate history such as Victorian era Britain or "Wild West"-era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of HG Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville. Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace's Analytical Engine. Steampunk also refers to art, fashion, and design that are informed by the aesthetics of Steampunk literature.
