A profile of Wim Crouwel: the Dutch graphic designer Video Clips. Duration : 3.93 Mins.
"For me it is always a question of thinking before sketching," explains Wim Crouwel, the Dutch graphic designer. "A design ripens in my head, and then I see it more or less in front of me, before I take a pencil and do it on paper". Phaidon.com caught up with Crouwel in Utrecht at Schröder House - designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a name that was familiar to Crouwel as a student at art school (and who would later become an acquaintance). In a career spanning more than 60 years, Crouwel discusses how he was influenced by the Swiss design movement of the 1950s and how he became a graphic designer, known to his friends as 'grid-nick': "I developed a kind of grid in which my design would take shape. It's very architectural because I'm influenced as much by architecture as by other graphic designers and artists."

Krzysztof Wodiczko: Designer Adam Whiton | Art21 "Exclusive" Video Clips. Duration : 2.98 Mins.
Episode #133: Filmed at the Interrogative Design Group offices at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, designer Adam Whiton discusses his work with artist Krzysztof Wodiczko. By developing innovative technology for projects such as "The Tijuana Projection" (2001), "Dis-Armor" (1999-2000), and "AEgis" (2000), Wodiczko and Whiton explore the potential for design to be used in a way that will "get people to think more...trigger questions and make people uncomfortable." By appropriating public buildings and monuments as backdrops for projections, Krzysztof Wodiczko focuses attention on ways in which architecture and monuments reflect collective memory and history. Projecting images of community members' hands, faces, or entire bodies onto architectural façades, and combining those images with voiced testimonies, Wodiczko disrupts our traditional understanding of the functions of public space and architecture. He challenges the silent, stark monumentality of buildings, activating them in an examination of notions of human rights, democracy, and truths about the violence, alienation, and inhumanity that underlie countless aspects of social interaction in present-day society. Learn more about Krzysztof Wodiczko: www.art21.org VIDEO | Producer: Wesley Miller & Nick Ravich. Interview: Susan Sollins. Camera: Gary Henoch. Sound: Steve Bores. Editor: Joaquin Perez??. Josef Svoboda - scénograf, Czech artist and scenic designer Tube. Duration : 3.73 Mins.
Josef Svoboda (May 10, 1920 in Čáslav - April 8, 2002 in Prague) was a Czech artist and scenic designer. Svoboda was born in Čáslav, Czechoslovakia (today the Czech Republic). He began his training as an architect at the Central School of Housing in Prague. At the end of World War II he became interested in theatre and design. He began to study scenography at the Prague Conservatory and architecture at the Academy of Applied Arts. Svoboda became the principal designer at the Czech National Theatre in 1948 and held that position for more than 30 years. His multimedia installations Laterna Magika and Polyekran with director Alfréd Radok allowed him to be internationally known in 1958. These productions introduced the combination of live actors and filmed projections. Svoboda is also responsible for introducing modern technologies and materials such as plastics, hydraulics and lasers into his designs. In 1967 Svoboda created one of is best known special effects, a three-dimensional pillar of light. This was created by the use of an aerosol mixture which revealed low-voltage luminaries. Josef Svoboda considered himself a scenographer rather than a designer; he chose to show a more holistic, architectural, non-naturalistic approach to design. His 700 plus designs include Insect Comedy (Czech National Theatre, 1946); Rusalka (Teatro La Fenice, Venice, 1958); Carmen (Metropolitan Opera, New York City, 1972); The Firebird (Royal Danish Theatre, Copenhagen, 1972); I Vespri ...

Orlando Home Designer, Florida Luxury Detail Design Tube. Duration : 4.25 Mins.
www.SusanBerryDesign.com, SusanBerry@ClassicalHomeDesign.com Orlando, Florida Home of Luxury Home Designer, Susan Berry, ASID. Palazzo del Lago, the 2006 Street of Dreams in Bella Collina, represents the very finest in architectural design, interior innovation and handcrafted artistry. The interior detailing, materials selections and exterior details and specifications are the work of Susan Berry, of Classical Home Design. Walls with the look of aged plaster, copper-clad windows, medieval-style groin vaults and intricate wrought-iron accents further evoke the home's old-world feel. Those time-honored touches give way to a more polished, sophisticated look in the formal areas of the home, where imported marble and onyx, magnificent gold and crystal chandeliers, and exquisitely embellished floors and walls create a refined air. The dramatic rotunda above the stair tower is hand-painted to resemble the stained-glass dome of a Venetian conservatory spotted by builder Rick Vogel during his European travels. Homage is paid to the demands—and pleasures—of modern life as well. To answer the present-day emphasis on alfresco living space, ingenious design provides the best of both worlds in the rear of the home adjacent to the pool. Here, massive pocketed sliding doors telescope open to create an indoor-outdoor space as the interior space blends seamlessly with the lanai and pool. Outdoors, extensive gold travertine decking leads toward elegant balustrades that frame the space that ...
